Intermittent Starting Problems on my Cat 3126
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:01:38 PM »
Hello All

My starter motor fails to rotate and start the engine occasionally. Seems to be most prevalent on the warmer days.
Have had ignition switch replaced along with the starter solenoid. A well known shop here in Florida cant seem to get the problem diagnosed.
 .

Once in a while when it fails to rotate the starter motor upon returning the ignition switch from the crank to the run position there is a click like the starter motor tries to engage

Any suggestions out there?

Thank You

Next time this happens, leave the key in the on (not start) position.

Verify that the Allison shift pad is illuminated and in N.

Verify that the dash HVAC fan works.

If these things do not work (as they always should with the key on), the IGNITION SOLENOID is the first suspect.  Because of all the loads that work with the ignition on, the ignition switch is just used to signal the ignition solenoid  to make contact and all circuits normally on with the ignition on are powered from the solenoid.

There are some better quality solenoids if this is the issue.  Let us know and we can point you toward them.

OK everybody I suspect now my problem may be resolved

Stopped in Gaffney, home of Freightliner, & they diagnosed a problem in the "VIM box".

Seems like way back last summer a squirrel made his home there for a while as evidenced by the large number of acorns he
left behind.

He must have got tired of the acorns as for dessert he gnawed on the ground wire in my VIM box >:(

Wiring repaired and hopefully problem resolved

End of report
