Check Engine Light coming on
« on: April 30, 2015, 04:38:21 PM »
I'm not sure exactly which category this falls under but I'll start with fuel.  While driving, usually on a level grade, the check-engine light comes on and the engine loses power.  It doesn't last long, usually 5 to 10 seconds, then everything runs well.  Sometimes we go days without any problem, other times the light flashes on and off for an hour or more.  The engine never sputters or stops, it just kind of slows down briefly then comes right back.  Could it be fuel filters or the air filter?  Both fuel and air filters were replaced in July 2014, and we have only drive 8,000 miles since.  It is a Cat 300, 1998 Dutchstar.  Thanks.

I would start by checking the fuel filter.  Drain a little and make sure you don't have water, dirt or algae.

If the air filter is relatively new, check the air filter minder gauge.  It should tell you if the air filter is the issue.

If neither of the above, go to a Caterpillar dealer or use on-board diagnostics to check for codes.
