Turbo boost
« on: May 23, 2016, 06:06:44 PM »
My turbo boost is only getting up to 18 at best and usually not that much.  Going up hills is like having a peddle car. Sliver leaf says no fault and the service center says computer showed no problems. Any suggestions as to what could be going on. I need to get this sorted out and I was wondering if there could be a leak somewhere.

Welcome, usually boost problems will log a dtc or event in about 8 seconds, have the fuel filters been changed recently.

Have you checked the wastegate? It may not be operating correctly.

One other thought have you checked all the connection clamps and joints from the turbo to intake, check for leaks and for leaks in the CAC.

Did you ever have good boost.?  When you say you get up to 18, is that psi or inches of mercury?  I had my  charge air cooler leak on my 2000 Magna with CAT C-10. I only got about 9 psi (about 18 "Hg).  Had to replace the CAC.  Not a pleasant experience but I now get boost pressures (up to 27 psi) equivalent to what the engine got on the test stand at CAT when it was built.

Adriane,  can you measure the duty cycle signal from the accelerator position sensor while you or a helper is driving and trying to accelerate, you should see a signal of about 80 % at wide open throttle.
Is the lack of power or boost consistent or intermittent or only under load.

As Pete questioned what is the history of your problem.

Do you know what your fuel pressure is when you are seeing low boost.
Is there any smoke when boost is low?

There are a hand full of possibilities besides ones already mentioned and the more info may help come to a solution.
