C10/3126 cuts out then starts up
« on: August 09, 2016, 07:57:18 AM »
We have a 1999 C10 (serial# 3CS02520) with an Allison HD4060, Jakes, WIlliams Electric throttle with Cat Engine monitor system in a 2000 Country Coach. This is a Gillig chassis also known as Dynomax. Under normal highway driving conditions with no warning the engine will occasionally go to 0% power and we coast over to the shoulder. When the coach reaches 12 MPH, with the accelerator pressed, the engine will start back up and go to full power. We merge back on the road and may not see that problem again for 1,000 miles.  Possibly related but not sure, the engine also will miss from time to time, but not consistently. I've changed both fuel filters. We've put over 10,0000 miles on this coach since purchase in April and the problem didn't occur until we had driven it about 2,000 miles. The Cat Engine monitor doesn't give any diagnostic codes. Coolant temp always runs between 188 and 200. Usually 190-194. Oil pressure is 38 psi at 1750 RPM. I'm at a loss where to start troubleshooting.

I have a VMSpec system but have not had it plugged in when this symptom occurs. Next trip is in two weeks and I'll definitely have VMSpec turned on.

Well I finally had time to have the codes pulled. Turns out the error was engine speed not sensed or something like that. So I replaced cam and crank position sensors - problem solved. It runs much better, never misses and I consider this a good fix. Bought the parts at the local Cat dealer.

Thank you for posting your "fix" this will help some one down the road.
