Cat frame mounted primary/water separator filter number
« on: May 27, 2017, 04:16:02 PM »
I am changing my fuel filters on my 300 HP Cat in my Tradewinds.
I can find the engine mounted Cat 1R-0751 secondary filter but I can not find the frame mounted primary/water separator filter.
Currently on it has and Alliance ABP/N122-32FRT01.
Anyone have cross reference number for this?

At least some of those filter numbers cross to 2 micron filters.  You want a 10 to 30 micron filter for your primary.

Having a 2 micron primary followed by a 2 micron secondary is NOT a good a reasonable answer.

I ordered the Cat didn't see a Micron rating but  in the description it said
"Standard Efficiency Fuel Water Separators are designed to eliminate 100% free water and 90% emulsified water along with smaller contaminates while helping extend the life of your secondary filter and expensive injectors.
Cat® Fuel Water Separators are built to extend the life of your secondary filter and precision fuel system components."

So it is designed to work with a secondary filter.

Jay,

That description exactly matches what you want-- a courser micron rating primary filter followed by the Caterpillar two micron secondary fuel filter.

It might be helpful to post which part numbers cross to what micron filter.

Bill,

The only cross reference guide I have is on Wix site.  I do NOT know if they are 100% accurate for the OE part number.

There is the Wix cross reference guide: http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/filterlookup.aspx

Thanks you have been so much help, so I would like to ask a 2 more questions if I could.

First I got the filter and it doesn't have a replacement sediment bowl, mine is pretty aged and cloudy.
Do you know the  number for a replacement bowl?

Second I read on line about  maybe fuel filers are the main cause of DP break downs, this because of lack of maintenance  or just getting bad fuel. Should I carry spares of these filters in my coach?

Any parts dealer who stocks the filters will have/can easily get the bowls.  And, ABSOLUTELY, have a spare bowl.  That way you can install the bowl on the new filter and do a quick change.  Clean the old one and install it on the next new filter.

Yes, always have TWO sets of spare fuel filters.  You never know when you will get bad fuel and it can clog several sets of filters.

Had an instance with a member of the Diesel RV Club on his way to our last Rally and couldn't make 30 MPH up hills.  When he got to the Rally, it looked like the primary filter was full of gravel.  Changed it and no issues in the mountains on the way home.  If he had carried spare filters, could have changed it on the road and saves a lot of worry and a couple of hours at LOW speed.

Do you know the number for the bowl the only cat bowl I can find doesn't look it is has the correct threads, I need one with external thread to screw in to internal thread on the filter, the one I find look like it has eternal thread to  screw to a filter with external threads.
the only one I find is  https://www.amazon.com/BOWL-for-Caterpillar-C9-343-5527/dp/B06XK1KS2T/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496459090&sr=8-1&keywords=CAT+343-5527

Hi,

According to my search.  The part number of the bowl with external threads is 146-6696 to fit the CAT Filter 198-6378

Have you checked with a Caterpillar dealer?

Google search DID find hits on that PN and it does have external threads.

Hi Guys,

Are you sure it is really a Cat part?  I was purchasing fuel water separator filters from Cat dealer and later found out that they were actually made by Racor/Parker.

I tried to attach a .pdf which has photos of both internal and external threads for the clear bottom bowls.

The bowl looks the same as the CAT part 146-6696 that I just picked up at the local CAT parts in Tucson.  Part was in Phoenix yesterday and shipped to Tucson overnight.  It fits perfectly on the bottom of my filter.  There were only two in the Southwest.  One in Phoenix and one in LA, so seems to be quite rare.  Maybe Racor is another part source?
Best,
Phil
