« on: August 03, 2018, 12:45:08 PM »
I get mixed messages as to how high to rev a Cat 3116  some places in the book say 2500  its always going at least that just before it shifts.. another place in manual said 2600 and another said 2900  its at 2600 at 70 or so. its in a 91 Beaver Baronet. 4 speed Allison

Best advice is to call the Caterpillar RV Hotline with your engine serial number: 877 777-3126.

The pertinent RPM's you want from them are:

Idle speed:
Peak Torque ____ lb-ft @____RPM.
Peak HP _____ HP @ ____ RPM
Governed _____RPM
Overspeed (max speed in overrun situation/no throttle) _______RPM

On the road again, may I suggest that your Caterpillar 3116 is a mechanical engine. The steps to increase engine rpms( is involved and required several operation steps in order) using special tooling.  Have all technical information and tooling to preform this operation and
would not attemp trying this at home. Ask Dave Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

On the road again, hi back with you on your 3116 engine rpm question. Looking into
the question with technical information on 3116. I need. S/N number off your plate on
valve cover, the reason on setting of your overhead ( which includes injectors fuel output
Injector rack synchronization, engine rpms and valve setting. ) the fuel load will be determined
engine rpm for rated horsepower. It can be 2500 rpm or 2600 rpm. Excess fuel timing
will fall back on setting fuel rack synchronization hunting or surge up and down and excess
smoke.  Ask Dave. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic.
