Title: Notifications
Post by: Ken Carpenter on September 26, 2011, 09:41:37 AM
When you register Diesel RV Club Forum allows you to be notified of replies to posts, newly posted topics, and forum announcements. You can change those settings by going to Profile, then select Modify Profile.  The following illustration may help:
(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

There you can oversee the topics and boards from which you are currently receiving notifications.

Your Nofication Choices include:

- Turn email topic notification on when you post in a topic. This is not recommended when you use "board" notifications.

- When sending email notifications, send the full text of the post in the email (NOT available with Daily / Weekly summary).

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me:
 - Instantly for all posts
 - Instantly - but only for the first (new) post in a topic.
 - Daily Summary
 - Weekly Summary

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, email me:
 - All messages
 - Nothing at all

Be sure to read Steve Cook's message below: DieselRVClub Emails and Notifications Set Up.

Hi Ken,
I am sorry about the question.  How do you request notifications.  I followed the instructions on your post but the instructions require one to request notification for a topic.  Can't we request to be notified for everything?
Thanks
Newton

In your profile, under notifications,  you need to check the box that says

"When sending email notifications, send the full text of the post in the email (NOT available with Daily / Weekly summary)."  This will provide you the body of the post in the email so you can see and reply to it like on Yahoo .... it will also still have the links so you can go to the post directly.

Also in the section "For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me"  you will probably want to select "Instantly for all posts" to get the email for every post, otherwise it will just send you an email when a new topic is started on a board you are watching but not the reply's.

That will give you an approximate Yahoo experience ...

DieselRVClub Emails and Notifications Set Up:

The email capability is available now in the new forum.

There are multiple ways to format your profile as to notification via email. You can receive only those messages from a specific board (Air Systems), or you can choose as many of the other boards as you like.

For example, if you are only interested in tech topics as is the current Yahoo forum, then you would set your profile to receive notifications when there is a post for that boards that have topics of interest for you.

Here’s how:

1. In your profile, the email address you set is the email address to which the notification will be sent.  The system will check against this email address when you reply by email.  Check this to make sure.

2. Go to your Profile.

3. Select drop down menu “Modify Profile” and pick “Notifications”

4. Select as below and Save Settings.

(no check) Turn topic notification “on” when you post or reply to a topic.
(check)    When sending notification on a reply or new topic, send the full text in the email (only for instantly selection below).

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:
select  in Drop Down Box "instantly" or "Once Daily", or "Once Weekly"

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:
        select "All Messages” (recommended)

(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

5. Now select the main Forum tab

(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

6. Then select the board you would like to receive Notification when there is a post.

7. Above the solid yellow bar toward the right, select “Notify”

(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

8. Test this by selecting the Forums tab again and re-selecting that same board.

9.  Now when you look at the solid yellow bar, above it the “Unnotify” selection will appear.  This means you’re set for that board.

(Sorry, but you are not allowed to access the gallery)

10  Should you not want to continue to receive notifications from that board, then select the “Unnotify”  tab.

11. Repeat as you would like for any other board for which you would like to receive notifications of posts.

12. Done!

13. When you receive a Notification email, (whether at your PC or a mobile device) you can reply in your email system, and it will be posted to the correct CatRV board in which the post originated.

After you fill in your "Signature" information in your Profile once, you don't even have to sign your reply, as the CatRVClub site will add the signature in your profile to the message post.

I do not know how to do this. The message below is on the same page where I set up my notifications to hopefully get me the same results as a daily digest. What do I do? What I want is to be able to do is be notified of all posts just like the daily digest without having to go each board and selecting it individually. Is this possible?

You aren't receiving notifications on any boards right now.

To request email notifications from a specific board, click the "notify" button from the index (topic listing) of that board.
thanks

If you are looking for an email with all the posts since your last visit I am not aware of that being an option.  I like the feature beside my login profile that allows me to see all posts since my last visit.  That way I do not have to scan each board.

Ken is correct, there is not a Yahoo style daily digest where you can get a once (or sometimes multiple) mailing of all the new posts.

The daily digest format here is instead will have a shortened clip of the post followed by a link should you want to see more, and of course reply (since you can't reply to a daily digest since no one would know which message you were replying to).  To enable this feature you must still follow the above instructions, selecting which boards you want to receive notifications on, and those are the ones that would be included in the digest sent to you.  This allows members to tune the digest to what they are most interested in.

Then instead of selecting instantly for all posts you would instead select daily summary for your notification option.

Or do what Ken suggested, Go to the site and select the "show all posts since last visit", that way you don't have to navigate to each board to see whats new since you last came to the site.

I'm hoping this was a carefully thought out change for good reasons, but for me it may be such an additional hassle I'll just drop out of the forums.  The Yahoo setup was very user friendly, I just spent a half hour getting this set up to what I hope will be similar to the Yahoo experience.  I do not want to have to go to the site to see all the latest posts, and splitting up all the categories seems unnecessary since one could just search for the info one wanted before.  Am I missing something here?  And did anyone ask if the people using the site wanted to change?

I moderate 2 Yahoo groups myself and they are quite easy to use and moderate.  There should at least be one button to sign up for all the forums here if one wants to do so without having to do each one.  I imagine you don't have that option though.

Ken & Steve,
I guess I agree with Douglas to some extent. Please receive this as feedback for planning future changes, not as giving hard working volunteer administrators a hard time.

I found the Yahoo Group a hassle to work with, but used the digest email to avoid going on the group. So, I too miss the full content digest and would like to see it come back. My primary access is through the iPhone and I seldom use the laptop for this effort unless I feel I can contribute and wish to reply. Already I check for content far less frequently and may eventually drift away in favor of the CAT Owners forum on iRV2 which is much more accessible since they have an "App for That" :) I don't expect an App here, but a single daily digest would be appreciated.

Thank you for your feedback.  It today's world it seems everyone wants things just the way they like it -- we truely understand.  That was part of the motivation to move to a new platform that provided flexibility and more choices on how to participate in the forum and to receive posts.  I'm sure Steve, who developed the SMF mod that allows email posts similar to Yahoo, will take your thoughts under advisement.

As for smartphones, we do have those on the list* but our immediate goal is to get everyone migrated and acclimated to this new Forum. By being able to pick the specific boards you want to follow a forum member can configure the Forum so that it respects their interests and their smartphone data plan limits.

Hang in there.

Ken

* There already is an app for both Androids and iPhones that works with SMF sites.  Development work is required for enable the forum to interact with the app.

Thanks Ken,
There is a lot of good work going into this effort, and it is appreciated. Bottom line is the information that is brought up here is priceless.

Ken,

I have previously set up my profile to receive daily notifications. I selected several boards I am interested in, and I was receiving daily messages. I have gone several months and only received notifications on a sporatic basis. When I recently logged onto the site to post a message, I found there was much more traffic than I was getting notified about.
I went in and checked my notifications profile and it seems to still be configured as I ubderstood your original instructions. All of the boards I am interested in still had check marks in the right hand boxes.
I have re-read the original posts and cannot understand why I am not getting notified. Sure I am doing something wrong, but I can' figure out what.
Any help or suggestions?

Thanks

Gary Craig

Gary,

Not Ken, but not sure if you read mail from your desktop or whether you sign in and use webmail.

For some reason, some of the time, the forum posts find their way into my spam folder on the web - they don't make it to my desktop email [Outlook]. Same happens to my wife with some of her emails.

If you use a desktop email program, I would recommend going in to the web mail account direct, and checking your Spam or Junk mail folder online about once a month or so.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Tom,
Thanks for the feedback. I use a combination of Outlook and direct web access, and none of the deisel club messages have shown up in spam or junk folders. It seems like the problem began occurring when the forum changed from Cat club to Deisel club. I still very rarely get a message, but lucky to get one every 7-10 days and I use to get them daily.
I don't know if I was supposed to do something with the change, but obviously I can still log in and I do get some mail.

Thanks again

Gary Craig

Gary.

Steve Cook has investigated the site's email configuration settings and conducted several tests and found everything to be working properly.

Formerly, I did not have notifications set for all boards but have now done so and have been receiving emails for all posts.

When it comes to email there are many points of potential failure and Tom's advice appears to be spot on.

It seems like the problem began occurring when the forum changed from Cat club to Deisel club.

Gary,

One point Ken forgot to mention - there has been no change to the forum or its hosting as a result of the club name change.  Any forum notification changes are purely coincidental.

Steve,

Not sure what to make of it. I still get all of my dailys from yahoo forums, and I have nothing coming up in junk or spam folders. I got daily messages after the conversion from yahoo, and for a period after conversion to the diesel rv club. Then all of a sudden i was no longer getting them. I went in and turned off all of my board notifications then turned them on again and everything seems the same as what I read in the notifications messages posted on how to set up.
I get messages about dues or new club card, but no notifications.
Obviously not end of the world. I will just accept that some folks may not get notifications and I will use my browser to go on the club site and check for updates.

Thanks for the help.

Gary
