Title: Engine will not turn over
Post by: stadams76 on September 12, 2016, 01:31:25 PM
We have a 2001 Monaco Dynasty, Cummins 350 hp, 8.3 ISC. Today we went out to get ready for a trip and the engine would not start. First try, all appeared good, dash lights came on, wait to start light goes out but when I turned the key to crank, NOTHING. Dash lights go out. Tried again a couple more times, same thing. Check chassis battery, all good. Turned the key on, dash lights on, wait to start light goes out. Went to the back of coach and hit the rear start switch to see what would happen. Engine starts right up! Any suggestions as to what is going on?

stadams76,

Welcome to the Diesel RV Club Forum.

If batteries and connections are good, and turning the ignition to the start position does not illuminate the shift pad, show warning lights and also run any items that only run with ignition on, the "first suspect" is the IGNITION SOLENOID.

The key/ignition switch only serves to activate/close the ignition solenoid.  The heavy loads such as cash HVAC fan do not go through the ignition switch.

It will likely be located up front in an electrical compartment.

They are easy to test:

With ignition off, one large lug will show chassis battery voltage.
With ignition on, BOTH large lugs will show chassis battery voltage.

Yes, it could also be a bad ignition switch, but they fail much less often than the ignition solenoids.

Thanks Brett,

I will give that a try.

We decided to remove and replace both the ignition and starter solenoids. The starter solenoid had quiet a bit of corrosion. We will let you know if the problem persist.
Thanks again for your help
