Engine oil overfill ?
« on: October 29, 2024, 07:37:12 AM »
What problems may arise when there is too much oil in the crankcase of an ISX15? We have an 06 Affinity with Silver Leaf. Evidence suggests we are 6 qts high on the dipstick. It’s well over the hash mark on the dip stick. Last oil change left it just a hair above the hash marks (full line), and now it is even higher. We have an add-oil reservoir on board. I believe the switch in bay P7 activates a small pump to add new oil, but I’ve never used it. Oil level has always been full or high. Could that device be pushing oil into the crankcase if device is faulty?
Along with this scenario, after being parked for 5 months at a work lamp job in WI, w/ 5 engine exercise sessions during that parked period, we left to head south as weather changed, and found ourselves stopped in a severe nose down attitude for maybe a minute, waiting for traffic, and minutes after getting going, a huge puff of black smoke blows out the exhaust while under hard acceleration. The check engine lite came on immediately, and Silver Leaf fault showed on the screen. The smoke remained evident the rest of the day but only under moderate to high acceleration pressure. The tow car has a light mist of black covering the passenger side.
I’m thinking that the damn oil overfill somehow got sucked into something when all the extra oil was pooling in the front of the crankcase for that extended period.
Looking for some thoughts from my brilliant club members.

First issue is to determine whether the high level in the crankcase is indeed just engine oil, or whether there is diesel fuel in it.

If just oil, something inexpensive such as https://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-63144.html would work just fine.

If diesel dilution, talk with a Cummins dealer and minimize driving until fixed.

Hey Brett. Any ideas how to get the 5/16” OD polyethylene tubing past the obstruction near the bottom of the dip stick tube? I’m sucking nothing but air and based on the length of the dipstick, I’ve got about 6 more inches to go to hit paydirt. What is down in that void? I attempted the oil fill cap at the base of the block store insert the suck hose but accessed nothing there.

How about the 2nd half of my original query? Am I looking at an EGR cleaning or replacement?

Replies in SOLID LETTER CAPS.

OTHER THAN ROTATING THE  TUBE, YOU COULD ALSO INSERT THE NEXT SMALLER DIAMETER TUBE IN THE 5/16" TUBE. THE SMALLER DIAMETER TUBE SHOULD REACH THE PAN.

How about the 2nd half of my original query? Am I looking at an EGR cleaning or replacement? SORRY, NEVER WORKED WITH AN ENGINE WITH EGR.

Can you recommend any members with EGR experience. I figure you must be running a CAT. Thanks for your interest in my topic. There is no diesel in the oil that I can tell. It was tested at the FMCA Tucson rally last spring and looked good according to Dave’s Diesel. I think I found some assist in member Mike Zap, whose Cummins just had an EGR valve replacement and exhibited identical symptoms.
